A few words about my photographs
I have been making photographs since I was in high school. I have almost always worked somewhere in the photo field, in one form of another. It is an interesting time to be involved in the craft these days. The transition from analog to digital has affected the photo world in many ways, not always in a very friendly manner.
The images you see here have been taken over the last four years. They were all taken with a toy plastic camera, the Holga. It has been my only capture device since 1991. That summer, I worked at the Maine Photographic Workshops, in Rockport, Maine. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I totaled my car, spent 10 days in the hospital, fractured my pelvis and my 5th lumbar vertebrate. In other words, a pain. I started to use the Holga because it is plastic and doesn't weigh much. It was a way of taking some shots as I waddled around with a walker or crutches. After the first couples of rolls, I had to stop making fun of it and consider the images that I was making. I loved them, my sense of humor finally snuck into the frame. That was a revelation for me and I haven't replaced it since, although I have replaced the original camera a few times.
I am interested in the oddest things, the forgotten corners and quiet moments that don't normally attract a lot of attention. One of the galleries I have is named Odd Corners, for that very reason. I am a city boy, so I like to wander around . There is a word that sums it up for me: vicambulist, a person that wanders the city. Moi.
Please let me know how my pictures affect you. The whole purpose for me in using such a "crude" tool is to find the balance between technology and emotion: what is the minimum amount of gear I need to get the maximum amount of communication of my feelings.
